December Rain

December Rain

Ambient Music Composition

Imagine yourself looking out of a window at the countryside deep in winter, watching gentle December rain and just making out distant rumbles of thunder…

I think there’s something quite soporific and mesmerising about soft rainfall and with this atmospheric soundwork, I’ve tried to capture something of that feeling. The musical elements that combine with the natural sounds are inspired by an indistinct and misty, soft early morning here in the forest.

I hope it offers you a few peaceful moments in your busy day!

Like everything else on this website, it really sounds best on headphones.

New Forest Sounds and Amberfern

For those of you who enjoy the sounds and music I’ve been adding to this site over the last few years, may I suggest having a listen to some of my older work, which went under the name of “Amberfern” – inspired by the golden fronds that cover much of the forest woodlands and moorland areas in the autumn?

I’ve never mentioned it here before, but way back in 2011, I was extremely fortunate to get signed as Amberfern to a record company in California called Real Music for a multi-album deal. Three CD releases resulted; Quiescence – A World at Peace, Aquaessence – an Ocean of Calm and, from a planned series called Distant Horizons, Mediterranean (which is my personal favourite of the three).

I’m very proud to still remain on the label, which has latterly been taken over by Myndstream and the famous Cutting Edge Group who are based in the heart of Beverly Hills, Hollywood with a clear mission to:

Release the power of music to improve the health and wellbeing of billions of lives globally and transform wellness through the power of sound.

Here’s a link to my artist page on the label:

Whilst the original physical CD’s are no longer available, all three of my albums are still on worldwide general release and can be found on all the big streaming platforms. Nowadays, tracks from them are often heard within carefully-curated digital streams that the label produces for some of the finest health spas around the world.

If you like the output from my newforestsounds project, then I think you may perhaps find some of the tracks on those albums nice to listen to as well, and you may even like to check them out. My goal back then was the same as it is now – to create music to calm, relax and improve your wellbeing.

Anyway, here are the original cover images, which I’ve always thought were quite beautiful in the own right…

Hello, it’s nice to be back!

It really is, especially after all this time…

I thought I’d finished with my newforestsounds project, but with all the wars, unrest, upheaval and changes that are happening in our increasingly complex and stressful world, I felt that perhaps we could all benefit from some more quiet, gentle music and sounds inspired by nature, so I’m setting to work all over again to compose and produce a new new series of atmospheric soundworks simply for your listening enjoyment, all meticulously handmade in the heart of The New Forest using subtle instrumentation combined with sounds from the beautiful natural world that surrounds me here.

No annoying adverts. No charges. Nothing. Completely free to enjoy as usual… Just for you.

I recently saw the following quote somewhere. I think it perfectly encapsulates what I’m trying to do:

The more stressful times become, the more we need relaxing music to take us away from some of that stress. If our music can help with that, we’ve done something good.”

I hope that you’ll find newforestsounds a nice place to retreat to sometimes, especially when the wider world seems to be just too much to bear. Just pop on some headphones, close your eyes and drift away…

If you feel you’d like to subscribe to the site, which is simple and easy, then you’ll automatically get a link to each new piece of music or soundscape that I add, sent direct to your inbox, so you won’t miss a thing.

You’ll find the subscribe button at the bottom of the Welcome Page. On some phones and iPads, a little subscriber button seems to automatically pop up at the bottom of the screen, making it even easier.

Purify

Ambient Music Composition

This composition contains an important message about the benefit of trees in this era of climate change. Did you know that trees purify the air, trapping dust and absorbing pollutants? Each individual tree removes up to 1.7 kilos every year and provides shade from solar radiation. Trees absorb carbon dioxide as they grow, and the carbon that they store in their wood helps slow the rate of global warming. They reduce wind speeds and cool the air as they lose moisture and reflect heat upwards from their leaves. It’s estimated that trees can reduce the temperature in a city by up to 7°C.

Trees host vast microhabitats too. When young, they offer habitation and food to large communities of birds, insects, lichen and fungi. When ancient, their trunks also provide the hollow cover needed by species such as bats, beetles, tawny owls and woodpeckers. One mature oak can be home to as many as 500 different species.

Around the world we’re being encouraged to plant trees. The more that we plant, the better it will be for the environment and us. In the United Kingdom, The Woodland Trust are making it easy and low cost to do just that. Here’s a link to their online shop.

Please kindly pass this post on to your circle of friends through social media and elsewhere, so that we can try to reach out to as many people as possible, explain to them the wonderful benefits of our trees, and perhaps even encourage them to plant one of their own.

New Forest Sounds Ambient Music Podcast

Ambient Music Podcast Broadcast

The New Forest Sounds Ambient Music Podcast aims to bring the forest direct to you, through a selection of 100% relaxing, nature-inspired ambient music.

During this podcast, we’ll journey together in sound to some of the quiet places of England’s New Forest National Park. We’ll visit ethereal, misty moors, and even travel to the coast at Keyhaven to experience a smooth, glassy morning, and more besides.

We’ll hear birdsong like you’ve probably never heard it before, and there will be a couple of brain-teasers along the way too, where I play some forest sounds and give you the chance to see if you can recognise them.
